Torrey was great for hang gliding yesterday!! We had a whole bunch of Hawks there (Bill, Richard, Malury, Eric, Ernie, Pat, Greg, Jeff, Mike, Tom, John, Ken, Bob, Jim, Dave ...). In particular, Hawk #198 (Eric) was able to make his first flight at Torrey after getting his Hang 4. Good job Eric!!

I would be interested in Eric's (Hawk #198) opinion about the H-4 rating at Torrey Pines.
Does he think this site should be H-4?

I understand why it's a hang 4 site. It's a relatively small place to fly around and a lot to process while flying. Traffic, the rules of the window, blowing the whistle, top landing, cliff launch, etc. I'm not saying a hang 3 couldn't do it, but I could see where someone with less experience could easily get into trouble.
I had a fantastic day and found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to going back soon.

Even on a weekday (mild traffic) I would want an instructor watching me for the first few flights.
Congestion is not something common in this sport.
That's why I think it was important to clear up that tandem right of way rule.
Thanks for the reply.

You can thank Bob for that! My personal experience was much different (years ago).

Actually, Eric can thank every member of the Hawks - including himself!! We've all pulled together to apply the pressure that's made a huge difference.
The up side is that more and more hang glider pilots (and paraglider pilots) can go to Torrey and have a great time. The down side is that they may not realize how important it is to remain ever vigilant (watching the over that site like a Hawk). Your own treatment Mark needs to be remembered. We also need to remember David Beardslee being kicked out for life, and that Robin tried to charge him $100 just to fly tandem there (that was less than a year ago).
Mostly we need to remember that the price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
